William Shepard papers, 1786-1799.

William Shepard (1737-1817) of Westfield, Mass., obtained the rank of captain while serving in the French and Indian War. He later fought in the American Revolution as a colonel in the 3rd Continental Infantry, and later the 4th Massachusetts Infantry. In 1785 and 1786 he represented Westfield in the state legislature, and was appointed major-general of militia for Hampshire County. In that capacity he found himself responsible for the protection of the federal arsenal and courthouse in Springfield during Shays' Rebellion. Shepard's letters and documents detail some of his actions and decisions during that critical period. Shepard later was elected to the Governor's Council, and served in the federal House of Representatives between 1797 and 1803.
